I am diabetic, with a sweet tooth.. so to satisfy my dessert cravings after dinner?

I bought a bunch of hard candy to eat, I am doing about 3 or 4 after dinner, instead of say chocolate.

But someone said today, that hard candy is used to spike sugar levels if low, ...in some cases

So I am thinking hard candy BAD choice as alternative..

correct?

I am diabetic, with a sweet tooth.. so to satisfy my dessert cravings after dinner?
Hi,

if you want to end up like me, with amputations because of uncontrolled diabetes, just keep right on eating those candies...

...seriously. Get off the candy trick! For you it should be an absolute 'no-no'. It is possible to get sugar-free candies, ice cream and the like, but you need (really NEED) to avoid extra carbohydrates as these will raise your blood sugar level and, eventually, cause you all the problems that beset diabetics in later life.

I fooled myself into thinking I was controlling my diabetes well for more than forty years, but fell victim to an infection which wouldn't clear and which led, eventually, to gangrene and amputations. Not nice, not necessary and relatively easy to have avoided.

I didn't have a sweet tooth, just a large appetite for high carbohydrate foods.

In 1964, when I was diagnosed, I was advised to drink coffee without sugar and was offered saccarine instead. (I used to have several spoonfuls of sugar in coffee) I didn't like the taste of the sweetener, so tried it without anything. UGH! But only for a couple of days...then I began to realise I could actually taste the coffee and not just the sugar! Same with tea.

After a few weeks I could identify one cup out of a dozen which had the sugar in (and still can) the coffee tasted better and the cups were easier to wash! My 'sweet tooth' had vanished, for ever!

I vastly prefer to eat savoury items now and though they can still be fattening and high in carbohydrates, which can raise blood sugar levels, they are far less addictive than high-sugar desserts, etc,

Please try to curb your 'sweet tooth' I would not recommend you follow my path. It is filled with pain, disfigurement and loss of ability.

Don't do it. You will get all the help you need (if you actually follow their advice) from your health care professionals, who will be very pleased to have someone who actually listens and obeys rather than merely paying lip-service (guilty!) to what they say.

Good luck anyway...it can be hard, but it will be worth it, believe me.

Cheers,

BobSpain
Reply:maybe try sugarless? sucralose is the best sweetner..
Reply:Foods with sugars s the main ingredient raise your blood sugar quickly. Depending on the type and how severe your diabetes is a little sugar every now and then is ok. Ask your doctor to be safe of course, but there are other non-sugar alternatives.

There is now a no sugar added ice-cream by Breyers and even Klondike makes no sugar added Klondike bars.

I'd try the no dugar added swiss miss pudding. Vanilla is my favorite but there is also a chocolate flavor. Kozy Shack and Jello make sugarless pudding (and gelatin) as well.
Reply:Hershey's makes sugar free now!!! :-)

cost a little bit more, but the flavor is actually better then regular. There's even cookies an stuff now since Splenda happened.

I'm type II, thought my life was over when I first found out. I was under the impression "if it has flavor it's bad for you", turns out there's all kinds of 'crap" for us now days!!

Hard candy is basically crystallized flavored sugar, YES BAD unless your level is TOO low.

I keep candy for "emergency use" now. Cause we can pass out if our sugar level drops to low. but the only thing that happens is you sleep for a while, your body turns the cholesterol into sugar and brings your levels back up.

IF your sugar is too HIGH for extended periods of time, it can do DAMAGE to EVERYTHING. and I mean EVERYTHING.
Reply:Stevia rebaudiana is a safe, non-carbohydrate that is used as a sweetener. It is sold in HFSs. (Like saccharin, too much results in bitterness. Also, it doesn't work too well to sweeten chocolate.)

Agave nectar tastes sweeter than sugar, but has fewer carbs, and is also slow in getting into one's bloodstream, thus "safe for diabetics". (Very Tasty!) It also does NOT crystalize, like honey does.

Agave nectar to sweeten + plain yoghurt + lemon flavored codliver oil %26gt; tastes like lemon pudding! (; Iced plain/vanilla (unsweetened) soymilk can be substituted for the yoghurt.

Tastes great on cold cereal, too.
Reply:how bout u eat d sugar food w/o dinner. ? try to make it as the carbohidrate portion. let's day. 4 carbs=1 sugary food. so means. i day u may take 2 sugary food (make it 1 ONLY if possible), but no other carbs. ;-)
Reply:Wow, it's refreshing to see someone else that has found their way. Bob Spain. There's no reason on earth that a diabetic can't relearn how to eat. You should not live to eat, you should eat to live. That means you have to relearn how you think about eating. There is no reason on this earth that you have to pleasure yourself with a sweet dessert. Think about it. Getting rid of old, bad habits is as simple as replacing them with new, good habits. Who needs a sweet dessert? If you are craving something that is going to kill you, don't you think something's wrong with that? Yes, there are sweet alternatives to sugar... but why not have a salad instead? Your body will be much happier and you'll feel better.
Reply:You are not allowed sugar. That is the bottomline. I know it must be hard but if you don't want your organs slowly getting damaged then you have to get rid of the sweet tooth. I am not diabetic but it runs in my family (both sides) so I decided to stop cut down on sugary foods before I became obsessed with them. If you cut it out altogether you will not crave it - I promise.
Reply:I would agree that you can have hard candy or chocolate as long as you remove some other carbs from your daily diet. Otherwise I would recommend sugar free hard candy.
Reply:go sugarfree. or eat fruit. an apple is 15 carbs and it's sweet.

just cut back a little at a time on the sugary stuff, eventually you probably won't miss it.

i've been diabetic since i was six though, so i don't really remember having a whole lot of that stuff.. i remember halloween when i was five and eating candy and the next year my dad took my candy.

you just get used to it. but you have to try. cheating is just going to lead to complications like feet problems and vision problems.

it's serious, it really is, and you need to be responsible.
Reply:Yes hard candy is all sugar which you must avoid

Get sugar free candy if you need to or fruit as a dessert , chocolate made from 85% cocoa is better than normal chocolate

But as with any thing when you have diabetes is limit your self to any type of sweets
